I know that the “original” Otto e Mezzo Bombana, the one ranked n.39 in the 2013 “World’s 50 Best Restautants” list is the one in Hong Kong. But given that the Chef Umberto Bombana decided in 2010 to open the “twin restaurant” also in Shanghai I couldn’t miss the chance to make a visit.
Otto e Mezzo Bombana Shanghai is located in the Rockbund, just behind The Peninsula hotel, in a very high end and elegant shopping area. The decor is very elegant and formal and is reccomendable to reserve a table next to the terrace from where you can admire a wonderful view of the HuangPu River and the Oriental Pearl Tower. The restaurant is managed by the Sicilian Executive Chef Riccardo La Perna, and all the senior personnel is italian (we met Clelia Di Casola, Customer Relationship Manager) and this makes you really feel at home and realize that this is not the “usual” italian restaurant abroad.
You can choose both tasting set menus (one insipired to the Sicilian Cuisine, “Winter Sicilian Menu” and one classic degustation menu with the signature dishes of Chef Bombana) and a la carte selection. We opted to go a a la carte :
- Duck Liver Variation that comes in two different servings: a mousse with lemon peel purée and pan seared with passito wine and organic orange
- Caprese Salad
- Wagyu Beef braised short rib & Pan seared tenderloin with green vegetables purée, red wine sauce and seasonal vegetables
- Sicilian dessert (Cannolo, Cassata “rovesciata” and Pistachio ice cream)
Everything was very good, great ingredients and good technique. Of course the dessert didn’t taste exactely like the ones I used to have…but being sicilian I might have a stricter level of tolerance… I hope one day to visit the twin restaurant in Honk Kong, but definitely this was a great choice.
